Cozy transitional farmhouse sunroom with layered textiles by Hill House Design

The first crisp fall days are here, and I'm ready to pull out all my cozy sweaters! These cooler days make me want to bring that same cozy feeling into my home, too.

The good news? Getting your home ready for colder weather doesn't take a big renovation. A few thoughtful swaps can make every room feel warmer, calmer and ready for the season. Here are the simple swaps I'm making in my own home right now.

1. Layer your textiles

Textiles are the fastest way to change how a room feels. Swap out your lightweight cotton throws for heavier knits, and trade a few pillow covers for plaid, wool or velvet to add rich warmth. In the bedroom, a quilted layer at the foot of the bed goes a long way, and it's practical on chilly nights, too.

2. Make the closet swap

Putting away summer clothes, shoes and linens and bringing coats, sweaters and boots front and center makes it easy to layer as the weather cools. It's also the perfect time to donate anything nobody wore this year.

3. Give your entry a job

Wet boots and heavy coats need a landing spot, or they end up everywhere. An easy fix: add sturdy hooks at a height everyone can reach, plus a boot tray or washable rug in your mudroom. Short on interior space? Claim a corner of your garage and add a bench with hooks. (That's exactly what I'm doing right now while we get ready for our mudroom renovation!)

4. Warm up the lighting

Shorter days make where your light comes from matter more. Now's the time to switch on table and floor lamps instead of harsh overhead lights. You can even put a few lamps on timers so you never come home to a dark house.

These small swaps are so much easier when your home is designed to work for you, with storage right where you need it and spaces that change with the seasons. Need some ideas on items to warm-up your home? Check out some of our favorites here!

Warmly,

Carrie
